Your core should keep the record. The logic that changes often belongs in the layer above it.

THE SHORT ANSWER · An insurance API platform runs insurance functions such as product configuration, rating, underwriting rules, policy, billing and claims as reusable APIs that any channel, partner or AI agent can call. A core system keeps the official record of policies, premiums and claims. The two work best together. The API platform carries the logic that changes often. The core becomes a lean, stable system of record.

A bank wants to sell travel insurance inside its app. The insurer behind it runs a core system built long before mobile apps existed. The product needs a quote in seconds, underwriting checks, a bound policy and a premium posted to finance. Which system does that work?

For most of the industry's history, the answer was the core. Every new channel meant another change request, another custom integration and another wait for a release window. That is why launching a product or onboarding a partner so often takes months.

An insurance API platform gives a different answer. This article explains what it is, how it differs from a core system and why the line between the two is moving.

What does an insurance API platform do?

An insurance API platform is a layer of insurance-specific services, each exposed as a documented API. Each API does one job: read a product's configuration, calculate a premium, check eligibility, issue a policy or register a claim. Web and mobile apps, agent portals, brokers, embedded partners and AI agents call these APIs in a standard format. None of them need to know how the core underneath is built.

Good platforms offer two kinds of API:

  • Atomic APIs do a single task, such as calculating a premium or validating eligibility. They are built once and reused everywhere.
  • Business APIs combine atomic APIs into a full journey, such as quote to bind for travel cover or a mid-term change on an SME package. On insureMO, teams build these with iComposer, our API orchestration tool.

Two-layer architecture: apps and AI agents on top, MCP, Skills, CLI and Business APIs in the middle, 2,500+ atomic APIs at the foundation.

Coverage matters too. Insurance APIs are not limited to policy transactions. insureMO's 2,500+ atomic APIs span life, general and health insurance, across product, rating, underwriting, policy, claims, reinsurance, billing, collections and payments. Teams can also build their own APIs with low-code tools, an SDK and a command-line interface (CLI).

Core system vs API platform: where the line sits

The traditional view puts the core system at the centre of everything. It stores the records. It also runs product rules, underwriting, rating and financial logic. In that view, the API platform is a thin connector on top.

We think the line belongs somewhere else.

The logic that changes most often (products, prices, underwriting rules and partner journeys) is the same logic that makes a core heavy, slow to change and risky to replace. Move it into an API layer and the core can focus on one job: keeping an accurate, auditable record. That is the shift from core system to system of record.

Why a lighter core makes modernisation easier

When rating, rules and product logic run in the API layer, the core does less every year. That changes the economics of modernisation. A CIO who once faced a full core replacement now faces a much smaller job: moving a data store.

Control does not suffer. Rating (in insureMO's SPOCK engine) and underwriting rules (in iRules) run in one place, so an agent portal, a bank app and an AI agent all get the same price and the same decision. That consistency used to be the core's job. Now the API layer guarantees it.

A global insurer in Japan is taking this route. It keeps its mainframe core as the system of record and uses insureMO as its middle office for product configuration, a unified rating engine, rules and the quote to issue journey for more than 300 agency users. Motor came first and non-motor follows. Modules move off the mainframe gradually, with the aim of retiring satellite systems along the way.

Insurance middleware or insurance middle office?

Many teams search for insurance middleware when they look for this layer. Generic middleware moves messages between systems. It translates formats and routes data, but it does not know what a premium, an endorsement or a claim is.

Insurance needs more than that, which is why we use the term insurance middle office. An insurance middle office is a layer of insurance-native APIs, data and AI tools that sits between your channels and your system of record. It understands products, rates, rules, policies and claims, so it can run them rather than just pass them along. It also connects you to the market: brokers, banks, embedded partners and distribution platforms.

Chubb Life uses insureMO this way. In the words of Ravindra Venisetti, Global CTO of Chubb Life: "insureMO, as a Middle Office layer, enables us to integrate with latest AI apps/capabilities while keeping our core policy admin system secure and stable."

The three terms in one line each:

  • Middleware connects systems.
  • An insurance API platform turns insurance functions into reusable APIs.
  • An insurance middle office runs insurance logic and serves it to channels, partners and AI agents.

Why the difference matters more with AI

AI agents and AI coding tools need APIs they can find, read and call safely. Most core systems do have APIs, but they were built for integration teams: proprietary formats, many operations bundled into one call and rules nobody wrote down. AI gets those wrong.

An API platform built on atomic, documented, standard APIs gives AI a safe set of tools with clear limits. That is why we describe insureMO as insurance infrastructure for AI. We go deeper in What AI-Ready Insurance APIs Actually Look Like and in our buyer's checklist for insurance API platforms.

From one product to a full digital core

An API platform does not force a big decision on day one. insureMO customers use it at very different scales:

  • Simple: quote, rate, underwrite and bind for a travel product, embedded in a partner's app.
  • Mid-sized: a complex SME or business owner's policy (BOP) with binding, mid-term financial adjustments and renewals.
  • Full core: policy, claims, reinsurance and finance across monoline, group, master certificate and package products in life, general and health, at multi-billion dollar carriers.

A leading multinational life insurer in Singapore went the furthest. After a major acquisition left it with several cores, it chose a microservices, API-first core on insureMO to consolidate them onto one platform and progressively replace its systems of record. Results include a reduction of about 20% in technology-related product development time and cost, 14% faster life claims turnaround and 50% faster payment turnaround. Read the case study.

Frequently asked questions

What is an insurance API platform?

An insurance API platform exposes insurance functions such as product configuration, rating, underwriting, policy, billing and claims as reusable, documented APIs. Apps, partners and AI agents call these APIs directly, without needing access to the core system underneath.

Is an insurance API platform the same as a core system?

No. The core system keeps the official record of policies, premiums and claims. The API platform runs the logic that changes often and serves it to every channel. Insurers can move rating, rules and product logic into the API layer so the core becomes a lean system of record.

What is the difference between a core system and a system of record?

A traditional core system stores records and also runs product, rating, underwriting and financial logic. A system of record only keeps the authoritative data. Moving the logic into an API platform or middle office turns a heavy core into a system of record, which is far easier to maintain and to migrate.

How is insurance middleware different from an insurance API platform?

Middleware connects systems by moving and translating data between them. An insurance API platform turns insurance functions into reusable APIs. An insurance middle office goes further. It runs insurance logic such as rating and rules and serves it to channels, partners and AI agents.

Do insurers need to replace their core system to use an API platform?

No. An API platform works alongside the existing core. Insurers can start with one product or channel, then move more logic into the API layer over time. Some later replace the core in stages. None need a big-bang replacement.

Are insurance APIs limited to policy transactions?

No. insureMO's 2,500+ atomic APIs cover life, general and health insurance across product, rating, underwriting, policy, claims, reinsurance, billing, collections and payments. Teams can also build custom APIs for product modelling, rating, rules, document generation and claims with low-code tools, an SDK and a CLI. Together these form a middle office API layer that connects to the market and to internal systems of record.

With insureMO, am I buying a full insurance system?

Not necessarily. Some customers use insureMO for one simple embedded journey, such as quote to bind for travel insurance. Others run complex SME products with mid-term adjustments and renewals. Some multi-billion dollar carriers use it as a full digital core for policy, claims, reinsurance and finance across life, general and health. You start where it makes sense and grow from there.
